Introduction

Sri Lanka, a small tropical island in the Indian ocean, has renowned world wide for the intrinsic flavours of the natural spices grown in the country. The island was one of the important trade hub in the historic for eastern international spice trade controlled first by Arabs and then by Europeans. Many annual and perennial spices, native to humid tropics, are grown in Sri Lanka and among them Cinnamon, Pepper, Clove, Nutmeg and Cardamom are major crops with special significance to export trade. The growing and processing of spices provides cash income to a wide range of rural Sri Lankans, particularly small holders

The main players in the EAC sector comprise of smallholder producers, family owned plantations, plantation companies, traders, exporters, industrialists, processors, brokers and other stakeholders
