Role and Objectives of the Department of Export Agriculture
The major responsibility of the Department of Export Agriculture (DEA) is to
make necessary actions to develop the Export Agriculture Crops(EAC) namely,
Cinnamon, Pepper, Cardamom, Cloves, Nutmeg, Coffee, Cocoa, Citronella, .Betel,
Arecanut as well as new crops with export potential such as Lemon grass,
Vanilla.
Main activities of the Department include promoting production & productivity of
EAC, enhancing quality of produce and facilitating product diversification and
value addition industries. The DEA is basically a technical Department and
functions are focused on Research and Development activities of the EAC sector.
Major Functions of the Department of Export Agriculture
The act of Parliament N.46 of January 10, 1992 on promotion of Export
Agriculture of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, empowers the
Department of certain functions and services pertaining to EAC. The major
functions of the DEA listed below.
- Organize and promote cultivation and processing of EAC
- Provide inputs and services
- Undertake and conduct and provide quality plants and planting material
- Administer assistance schemes
- Train personnel involved in EAC
- Conduct crop protection activities
- Promote the usage of fertilizer
- Assist in organizing and arranging marketing
- Disseminate information
- Conduct demonstrations and trials
- Experiment with new crops having export potential
- Exercise authority under the act mentioned above.
