Training Center of the Department of Export Agriculture was established in 1982 at Elwala in Matale district, 25 km from Kandy town in Sri Lanka. It comprises of a conference hall, a lecture hall, a hostel capable of providing residential facilities for 30 trainees at a time, demonstration fields covering most of the EAC and also a spice garden.
The objective of the training center is to plan, organize and conduct training programmes covering all aspects of EAC (i.e. plant production, plant protection, post harvest technology, etc.)
Target group for the trainings : Include farmers, officers of the department and other government/non government institutions, traders and students.
Training programmes : Are designed to disseminate knowledge, build-up necessary skills and attitudes of the participants and thereby to support strengthening the production and marketing base of EAC sector in Sri Lanka. Face to face lectures, participatory self learning sessions, multimedia presentations, discussions, individual and group assignments, study visits etc. are used achieving these aspects.
The training center is equipped with traditional and modern audio visuals ranging from traditional flip charts to modern interactive multimedia.
In addition, national and regional level workshops on various issues related to EAC sector are being conducted at the training center.
Staff of the training center includes an Assistant Director (an Officer of the Sri Lanka Scientific Service), Four Training Officers and supporting staff of 10 personnel.
